Roy Williams suspended one game for his trademark horse-collar tackle
Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams was suspended one game for his horse-collar tackle of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.
The tackle was banned in 2005 because Williams repeatedly used the horse-collar tactic and caused more than a few injuries.
This is the third time this season that Williams has been caught using the illegal tackling method and since fines never seemed to stop him, hopefully this suspension will. But I have a feeling he’ll be caught doing it again, probably sometime next season. I wonder what the league will do to him then — 4 game suspension?

Pentalizing these guys for tackling the ball carrier is really getting old. Who cares if he uses the horsecollar tackle? Last time I checked, that is below the facemask. I can understand not tackling by the facemask because someone can be paralyzed, or even die from a broken neck. Then again, I haven’t seen a tackle that there isn’t a possibility of injury. If the league will penalize someone for horsecollar tackles, how come no one gets penalized for ankle tackles? I’ve seen some broken ankles happen from those, yet that is still legal to use. Also, how come you can’t really touch the quarterback anymore? Who cares if they get hurt from a hit. I thought you had to be tough to play football anyway. I know I had to be when I played. You might as well stick a punter under center!!! I think the league should change to the NFFL-National Flag Football League. That is about as much contact as the league is allowing these days. Bring it back to when tough guys played the game.
Thats all true, but Horse-Collar tackles are illegal and Roy Williams continuously ignored the rule.
That should not even be a rule to begin with. Who cares if he tackled Terrell Owens with it and broke his leg. In my opinion, that’s all a part of the game. The reason rules like this are in place isn’t to keep players more safe, it’s to keep the teams’ commodities safe. There weren’t any rules like this in the past. Greats like Dick Butkus and Joe Greene would not be allowed to play in today’s NFL because they didn’t care how they tackled someone, or if they got hurt. This is the point I am trying to make. Just let them play!!!
